According to anew report, Apple's share in the US smartphone market fell to 20.8 percent in comparison to the 28 percent the company had last year.
The study by Kantar Worldpanel Comtech showed that Google's Android rose to the top spot in the US market from May 15 till 7 August with a market share of about 47.1 percent.
The platform commanded just about half of that figure last year. While Android grew to become the domination platform in the smartphone market, Apple's iPhone showed a dispointing performance in the fast growing market.
Research In Motion's BlackBerry smartphones took the second spot ahead of Apple wih a market share of 21.5 percent, which is about 4 per cent higher than the same period last year.
"Our research shows that this market is a key area for growth, with 17 million people aged 45+ in Britain who still don't own a smartphone, but these consumers want different things from their phone," said Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar Worldpanel Comtech.
